“Variations on One Melody” is an observational excursion into Damascus alleys depicting the harsh reality of children. Scenes of stained faces of working boys in factories and workshops, compelled to live this reality conflict with a little boy-playing Twinkle throughout the film. The short documentary is divided into acts: “Aging Childhood”, “Laborers”, “Moments of Fun” and “Unusual Talents’ that exposes poverty and hard work within a community that does not care about their wasted childhood. Exhausted shoe cleaners, carriers, blacksmiths and mechanics, they work, smoke and counts the pennies they make. In between “Moments of Fun” in the poor weary streets and “Unusual Talents” they create moments of fun and joy.
